The Youth Science Camp CREATEFUTURE took place on January 22nd, 2024 in the Krefeld Mediothek. At the camp, young people had the opportunity to realize their technical ideas on topics such as digitalization and artificial intelligence. The camp is being held for the third time by the zdi network KReMINTec organized in the lead and aimed at students from grade 9 onwards. The zdi network is supported by the Niederrhein Entrepreneurship, the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, the Krefeld Employment Agency, the Center for Digital Learning Worlds and the city of Krefeld.

The participants could choose from five topic areas that reflect current social challenges: energy and climate, mobility and traffic, society and the world of work, health and quality of life in Krefeld. They worked in small teams on their projects, which they developed with the help of mentors from science and business. Student Miriam was particularly happy about this support: “It was very nice that people came to you directly and that there were so many people available who had a lot of knowledge about the various topics. You are not left alone with your questions, but people come to you and offer help of their own accord.”

The event offers advantages not only for students

At the end of the camp, the young people presented their results in short pitches to a jury, which honored the best ideas. The Youth Science Camp is not only worthwhile for the young people taking part.

Companies also see advantages in getting involved with KReateFuture:

“Direct contact helps us immensely to find out what students are interested in these days and what topics they are dealing with in the IT environment. And of course we also hope to make ourselves more present as a Krefeld IT company,” says Annika von den Driesch from GOB Software & Systeme GmbH & Co. KG.

The young people's concepts were convincing

Among the student groups' pitches for their future-oriented concepts, two projects were particularly convincing: The “Future House” team was able to win over the audience with a plan for the sustainable and green use of the Krefeld Kaufhof building and received the audience award. The project with the working title “Smart School” was best received by the jury made up of regional business representatives and experts from the Niederrhein University. Here the young people developed a concept for the design of digital school lessons.

The Youth Science Camp was a complete success and showed how important it is to inspire young people for MINT careers and to offer them a platform for their talents.

Would you like to implement a similar format? Then take a look at our good zdi practice article on the topic zdi at the interface between science and business at! There we spoke, among other things, with the coordinator of the zdi network KReMINTec about the success factors of the KReateFUTURE project.
